Bromelain is an enzyme extracted from pineapple stem. It plays an important role in the digestive process.
Bromelain breaks down protein, especially the complex protein molecules into individual amino acids or small peptide units so the body can easily absorb them.
Bromelain is sometimes used together with a protein called trypsin and/or rutin, a substance found in buckwheat, for arthritis. The combination has improved knee conditions and reduced pain among arthritis patients.
Aside from the pineapple, green papaya also contains a good amount of bromelain.
